Chapter 1: "What are you trying to do?"

Chapter Text

Virgil expected to get in trouble, for someone to call him out on his mistake, but life continued on as though his little trip to Giantville never even happened. Virgil had gotten home before his mom anyways, so she didn’t notice anything odd. The school didn’t call his parents to say he skipped because even the counselors seemed to have forgotten about him. All his teachers assumed he had been sick and Virgil didn’t bother to correct them; after all, he was still a bit nervous that he’d get in trouble for skipping class.

His bruises from the bully might have been more of a giveaway, but being mid fall Virgil could get away with wearing his black hoodie everywhere. In fact, as the marks began to fade, Virgil began to question if it had happened at all. The idea was absurd. What, he had landed himself on the Giant side of town and just so happened to find the one Giant older kid who was super intimidating but also super cool and just so happened to take pity on him?

The idea was absurd, and yet Virgil couldn’t help but hope he would see Logan again. Every day after school he’d glance around, half hoping to see the Giant walking through his neighborhood again, but it hadn’t happened. Perhaps Virgil would have to seek out Logan himself then, but Virgil didn’t know the first thing about finding a Giant. He had found Logan’s school, sure, but that was mostly by accident, and Virgil knew better than to wander the larger streets alone again.

Or at least, he thought he did, until one day Virgil seemed to take the bus on his own accord. It wasn’t really a planned event, so Virgil had plenty of time to regret his actions as the buildings in view grew larger and larger. This was a horrible idea. His parents were gone for the weekend. If something happened to him, nobody would even know where he was going. Virgil didn’t know Giantville, and there were plenty of people just like those bullies who would happily take advantage of him.

Virgil shrunk back in his seat, feeling the bus rumble as Giants walked dangerously close to the human street running through the ginormous sidewalk. There were so many of them. Now that it wasn’t the middle of a weekday, Virgil found a lot more Giants were out and about. How was he ever going to find-?

There.

Quickly Virgil yanked the chain, stopping the bus. Through the throng of legs Virgil could just make out that familiar punk figure, leaning against a tree in what looked to be a little park. Briefly Virgil realized he didn’t even know if Logan wanted to see him, and Virgil froze in a half-stand. Oh, he shouldn’t have come here. This was so reckless of him.

“Kid, what are you trying to do?” The bus driver sounded exasperated, causing Virgil to jump. “You getting off ‘er what?”

“Uh, y-yes sir.” Virgil quickly scurried off, noticing the rest of the bus giving him curious looks. Once he was off, Virgil realized why. Out here, the noise was ludicrous. Giants in conversation, yelling at each other, joking around- all of it was Too. Much. Everything was going on at once, and Virgil couldn’t even try to steady himself because the ground seemed to constantly be vibrating with the constant movement of people who probably didn’t even know he was here.

“Logan!” Virgil yelled, trying to gain the giant’s attention from here, but his little voice was lost in all the clamor. It must have been lunch time or something, because the crowd only seemed to get larger the longer Virgil tried to orient himself. He wanted to get back on the bus and just go home, but turning around he couldn’t even see the stop anymore.

Virgil yelped, jumping back when a pair of converse almost crushed him, and the Giant didn’t even seem to notice, still chatting away on her phone. Virgil shuddered. Any one of those pairs of shoes could crush Virgil into a pulp, grinding him beneath their heel to be a splatter on the sidewalk. Would they even notice? Or would it just feel like stepping on a pebble.

This was like the world’s most dangerous game of frogger ever. Virgil dodged between various footwear, quickly learning that staying still was worse. The little human was panting, trying to catch his breath and avoid going round and round in circles. A different rumbling alerted him to a new danger, and Virgil’s eyes widened, having just seconds to duck as a skateboard rushed towards him.

Virgil shuddered, feeling the wheels rush right by him in nothing short of a miracle. Virgil shook terribly, frightened as the board continued over him. That had been close. Too close. As the board disappeared Virgil knew he needed to get up, but suddenly his legs weren’t working, and Virgil just wanted to stay huddled on the hard concrete and cry.

But the universe had other plans. Virgil gasped, eyes suddenly wide open as the ground disappeared beneath him. His stomach sank far too quickly as he was lifted up, up, up, tightly held within a stranger’s fingers. Virgil opened his mouth to scream, but the second he did a giant thumb blocked his thumb, forcing him to remain silent.

Virgil didn’t even get a look at his captor before he was shoved into a dark area. Brushing against the wall, Virgil realized the Giant had shoved him into a pocket.

“Let me out or you’ll regret it!” Virgil wanted to scream. “As soon as I get my hands on you, you’ll regret trapping me in here, you’ll see!” But because the hand stayed wrapped around him, all that came out was a series of muffled noises that the Giant ignored, walking away.

Virgil paled, realizing how royally screwed he was. None of the Giants had even heard him down in the ground; surely no one would even suspect a kidnapper had taken a human child in their pocket and casually walked amongst them. It had been so clean, so easy, like this person had done it before.

No one knew he was here, and nobody ever would. This Giant could do whatever they wanted, and Virgil could do nothing to stop them. Virgil felt tears collecting in his eyes, wishing he had never come to the Giant district. He should have stayed far, far away.
