Summary:

Katsuki and Midoriya are complicated, no one knows whether this fire that they throw at one another is pure hate or something entirely different, all Tsuyu knows is that she just wanted a peaceful shift.

Notes:

So this is the beginning one-shot a prequel/sequel for an upcoming multichapter fic that I'm working on in this universe, where we find out how Deku and Kacchan met and what actually happened between to get to this awkward tension filled point *cough*enemieswithbenefits*cough*.

Work Text:

__________

The board glared at Tsuyu like a villain would stare at their victims, cold and calculating with the promise of pain in the imminent future and no amount of staring back would be changing what was written on it. Maybe today would be different, perhaps the planets had aligned in her favour and she would be blessed with the calm that she desired, the gods look would down at her in pity after the countless of days she has endured of the same torture and grant her that reprieve. All this hope and naivety that was building her heart was instantly shattered by the mournful sigh that came abruptly beside her.

"There goes my hopes for a decent Friday, isn't it someone else's turn to put up with them?" Mina Ashido stood already dressed in her blue scrubs, pink hair peaking through her surgical cap, looking as dejected as Tsuyu felt.

"At least it's Friday, perhaps it'll put them in a better mood?" Mina simply raised her eyebrows at Tsuyu's comment and walked away, shoulder's tensed waiting for the impact that the day was sure to bring.

Resigning to her fate, Tsuyu turned to follow the pink haired nurse, making sure to fully enjoy the last few moments ofpeace that she was going to get, leaving behind the board that read:

'OR 4 - ENT - MR MIDORIYA
ANAESTHETIST - DR BAKUGOU
THEATRE TEAM: TSUYU ASUI
MINA ASHIDO
HANTA SERO (anaesthetics)
TORU HAGAKURE'

Both surgeon and anaesthetist were absolutely fine to work with separately, however when those two were working in the same Operating Room it felt like the air itself would combust from the sheer fire and perceived ferocity that those two threw at one another, most of the time it was difficult for the surrounding team members to tell if it was pure hatred or something else entirely different.

At least today was a simple list, upon looking at the up coming operations for the day Tsuyu was thanking her lucky stars that it was just some tonsillectomies and noses, they may even get to finish a bit earlier than normal from looking at it.

The peace and quiet continued for the first half an hour of the day, the operating team methodically setting up OR 4, lining up all the instruments and equipment required for the day, making sure that they had everything they could possibly need.

This calm did not last long.

The Operating Rooms door's were flung open with a resounding bang, echoes filling the once quiet room, welcoming in two people in scrubs, the taller of the two blonde and with scowling red eyes, the other wielding green hair and even greener eyes framed by freckles- both unaware of the surrounding people too caught up in their own 'conversation'.

"Kacchan you can't just add an extra case to my list without at least asking my first!"

"It's just a broken nose Deku, unless you don't think you can handle something so simple that a med student could do it. You and I both know that we are going to finish early so might as-"

"That is not the point. You should always consult with the surgeon, with me before you do anything like that, and besides I scheduled the list to be light, did you ever consider that I might have plans for tonight?" Midoriya was becoming flushed at this point, Tsuyu knew he meticulously planned all elective lists and hated anyone interfering with them.

" HAH? We both know that's absolute bull! You are here all the time, you don't have time to cook yourself a decent meal, I saw those ready meal boxes outside your apartment bin this morning, let alone socialise." The blonde threw back, clearly knowing Midoriya well enough to know his awful eating habits, they had all bared witness to his instant cup ramen lunches brimming with artificial flavourings and sugars.

"Stalking my bins now Kacchan? Never thought you'd stoop so low." Tsuyu winced at this comment, knowing exactly the reaction that he was going to get.

"Oh give over Deku, it's not my fault you followed me to the same apartment building and I have to go passed your shitty place every morni-"

"Gentlemen." Tsuyu interrupted, knowing that if she didn't stop them now they would never start the day officially and it was her job as team leader to keep this pair of squabbling children under control.

At the new voice added to the mix, Bakugou and Midoriya both looked around sharply towards her, the blonde giving his normal disinterested glare, whilst the green haired man gave her an apologetic smile.

"Good morning Tsuyu, sorry about that, would you like to start the team brief?"

The operating team promptly gathered around and went through the day's operations, 7 patients in total, the only concerns that were brought up were the odd difficult airway which Katsuki and Sero planned for seeing as Sero was helping out the anaesthetist for the day. Once everything was discussed Tsuyu called for the porter to collect the first patient, noting how there was no mention of the patient with the broken nose from their argument earlier.

_______

"Is it me or do they feel more tense than usual today?" Mina whispered as they watched Midoriya scrub up, his green eyes directing many glares at Katsuki, who had just finished intubating the patient and was settling him self at the anaesthetic machine.

"Things do feel more....strained than usual, though they seemed normal for them Tuesday when I last worked with them, perhaps they've had a stressful couple of day?" she replied back, conscious to keep her voice down so the aforementioned did not hear their musings about them.

Mina hummed, shifting her dark eye's between the two doctors:

"No, it doesn't feel like their normal spats, something's different, but no doubt we'll find out soon it's not like they're good at keeping their mouths shut. I give them five minutes."

Tsuyu looked back at Katsuki, who was now pulling out his tablet, and then at Midoriya who was now rolling his eyes-she just hoped her pink haired friend was wrong.

---------

Mina was right.

Tsuyu hated it when Mina was right.

"I know why you wanted to finish early today Deku." Katsuki grinned, it was not the nice happy kind, it was a smile a predator gave it's prey before they slaughtered them.

Not even bothering to look up, Midoriya continued focusing on taking out the tonsils in front of him.

"Oh do you now Kacchan?" At this Mina and Tsuyu looked at Hagakure in sympathy, she was the scrub nurse and therefore had no escape from whatever was about to go down between the two of them.

"I do, you see upon scrolling through my newsfeed I was reminded of what was being released today, actually it was released about five minutes ago..." Red eyes started becoming alight with mischief.

"Kacchan..." A warning sounded through Midoriya's voice, still not able to look up from tying off the right tonsil.

" The reboot of the All Might comics, and if I remember correctly you're a major fan right? Well looky here I've got a link to it and everything - why don't I just read it out now. I know you were probably waiting to finish work and curl up in that shitty flat of yours and be completely immersed in the universe - but I'm sure a fan as big as yourself can not wait to hear it, I know I certainly can't."

"Don't. You. Dare." Finally Midoriya could look up from the patient with a fierceness Tsuyu had never seen from him before despite working with the surgeon for several years, seeing this she knew what she may have to do and started edging towards the phone. The glare from the scrubbed up Midoriya did not deter Katsuki from his plan, no it only egged him on further, teeth glinting in the artificial light.

" So it starts off with a panel of All Might in his weakened form, he's walking towards a bridge, perhaps underneath it.."

Midoriya cut him off before he could go any further.

"LA LA LA, CAN'T HEAR YOU." The loudness of his voice caught everyone but Katsuki by surprise, they didn't realise how serious he was about All Might spoilers.

"UNDER THIS BRIDGE HE SEES THIS SLUDGE LIKE MONSTER AND SAYS-" Shouts the blonde, fighting to be heard.

"STILL CAN'T HEAR YOU, LA,LA,LA!" And soon Operating Room 4 was not a place of serenity and calm, but became a place of a non sensical shouting match between surgeon and anaesthetist - both trying to be heard over the other. Hagakure tried in vain to get them to settle down but to no avail, Tsuyu only had one option left now- two secret weapons that could salvage this situation and bleeped them both with the code they had given her for time just like this.

It took them three minutes to get there, three very long, agonising loud minutes for Uraraka and Kirishima to get to the viewing bay above them and turn the intercoms on.

"Why on earth can I hear you two having what I can only describe as a shouting match from the other side of the hospital?" Uraraka's tone was sharp and cut through the arguing pair, causing everyone to turn to look up at their saviours. There stood Uraraka in a pink blouse, clip board in hand and a stern look adorning her normal soft features.

Behind her stood Kirishima in his lab technicians coat, goggles still on his head and giving a sigh directed straight at the offending doctors, both new comers disappointed but not surprised at the actions of their best friends.

"Kacchan was spoiling the new All Might reboot for me." Begun Midoriya sheepishly, realising how childish he sounded.

"Yeah and Deku refused to put a patient on his already light list." Followed Katsuki with a huff and a glare. A beat of silence before-

"Really, you cause so much of a stir that we both get pulled out of work for this, I was in the middle of a patient's session! Izuku I'm so disappointed that you actually rose to his bait, I'd thought after all these years you'd have finally learnt not to. Not only that to put All Might a comic book character, before the needs a patient who is very likely in pain when you can fit them in is very selfish. I dread to think of what the others will say when they hear this." Uraraka ranted, Midoriya shrinking further into himself the more she went on. Katsuki was smiling knowing that he was right and Uraraka was just enforcing his opinion until-

"Bakugou c'mon man not cool, you should know more than anyone how much Midoriya loves the All Might comic, and how low it is to tease him about it in the middle of surgery, I thought you were better than this now." It was rare for Kirishima to use that tone, especially on Katsuki, causing everyone to look around at one another, holding their breaths to see what the response would be.

The pair of best friends strong tones clearly had the desired affect as both of the offending pair muttered sorry's - whether it was to each other or their friends Tsuyu was unsure, but she wasn't about to question it and thanked both Kirishima and Uraraka for their help. They both smiled and said if they caused any more issues to call, but Tsuyu knew (or hoped) that they could finally finish the day in moderate peace.

____________

They had finished the list with time to spare and with no further arguments, even fitting in the broken nose much to Tsuyu's and Katsuki's surprise. Despite the added case they still were an hour early, so Tsuyu and her team took their time to tidy and clean, the two doctors promptly leaving without a word once the list was done. Upon leaving their theatre and heading towards the nurses desk they were greeted with two guilty looking doctors holding a tray or four coffees and a box of chocolates.

"An apology for our behaviour today." squeaked Midoriya thrusting the coffees into Tsuyu's hands.

"Yeah, sorry you had to see that." Katsuki muttered handing the chocolates to Mina, who was just as surprised to hear an apology come from Bakugou as the rest of them, the team all looked at one another and smiled.

"It's no issue Mr Midoriya, Dr Bakugou- thank you for the coffees and I hope you enjoy the new comic." Tsuyu took a sip from her coffee surprised that they had remembered their usual orders, the team around her whooped at the thought of caffeine after a long week and they started to head towards the changing room, Tsuyu hanging back ever so slightly.

And if she heard Katsuki ask Midoriya if he wanted to grab a pizza and read the new comic together, and heard Midoriya's surprised squeak of a yes and the following muttering, well that was neither here nor there.
