Work Text:
Jeon Jungkook.
Jeon Jungkook…
The name rolls off the tongue like honey whenever it’s spoken… and it’s certainly being spoken more and more lately. It seems, the more time passes, the more attractive he seems to become – and not just to you. You hear girls talking about him in the corridors sometimes, and the pang of… whatever it is in your chest can only be consoled by the fact they probably have about as much of a chance with him as you do.
Sitting across from him now as he scribbles in his notebook, you study him. His brow is furrowed in concentration and he’s chewing delicately on his bottom lip. He runs a hand through his hair, pushing it back, only for the dark locks to flop back in his eyes.
It would be so easy for him to look up right now, crack a smile and ask what you were doing later. And you, regardless of what plans you had would tell him you were free. He’d take you for coffee, even though he doesn’t particularly like it. You’d bond over two steaming mugs and at the end of the evening he’d ask you if you wanted to go out again. So you would, you’d go for coffee again. And again. And that time he’d ask you if you wanted to go with him to dinner.
Dinner with Jungkook would turn into lunch with Jungkook and lunch with Jungkook would turn into breakfasts with Jungkook until he stopped asking to meet with you for meals altogether and just started randomly showing up at your house.
He’d be holding bags full of food, promising he was a great cook and where was your kitchen?
Burnt ramen isn’t good ramen, you’d learn, and no amount of kimchi can save Jeon Jungkook’s burnt ramen. You’d order pizza.
He would’ve convinced you to watch a movie with him, even though you knew there’d be no way for you to concentrate on a movie with Jeon Jungkook sitting beside you.
And he’d notice your lack of concentration, smile and ask what was wrong, to which you’d lie and tell him nothing as he put his arm around you, not all that convinced.
When he’d leave later on, he’d linger by the door, apologizing again for the ramen. He’d make up for it, he promised, although you already knew his promises didn’t really mean all that much. You’d just smile, and tell him once again that it was fine, reaching up to pinch his cheek.
Your movements would slow as he caught your wrist and gradually pulled you closer, until his other hand was cupping the side of your face and he was kissing you slowly, as though he had all the time in the world to get his point across.
At school, he’d grab your hand in the hallways and would gaze at you in class. Within days, the entire student body would know the golden Jeon Jungkook was finally dating someone.
You looked up. Jeon Jungkook had stopped scribbling in his notebook, his concentration replaced with something else entirely as his eyes rested upon the girl next to you. Your best friend.
He had looked up at her one day and cracked a smile, asking if she was free later. She’d had plans, but she’d cancelled to meet with him. Then they’d gone on date after date, until one night he came round her house to make her ramen and watch a movie. He burnt the ramen and they ordered pizza, and through his apologies he’d kissed her as though he’d had all the time in the world to get his point across.
In school, he held her hand in the hallways and he gazed at her in class, just like he was at this very moment.
She caught his stare just as everyone began to pack their things for next period and smirked back, stuffing her things in her bag and hopping around the table to link her arm with his as they left the classroom together, leaving you sitting alone at the table.
You were so wrapped up in self-pity over something you knew was so goddamn stupid that you barely noticed the figure in front of you until a hand was reaching out to lift two of your books off the table.
“Y/N… are you okay? Come on, we’ll be late.” You looked around, and sure enough the class was empty.
Well, except for you and Min Yoongi.
“Oh! Uh, thanks, Yoongi, sorry I was just, uh-”
Yoongi cracked a smile as you took the books from his hands and shoved them into your bag.
“That’s no problem. Hey, actually, I know this is a bit random but, I was just wondering if you were free later? It’s cool if you’re not you know it’s just I was wondering if maybe you wanted to get coffee with me or something and-”
There were a million and one things you needed to do tonight, and yet, with the smile Min Yoongi was offering you, full of hope…
“Yeah, I’m free.”
