They never talked about it. It was just something they fell into when they were still too young to be mindful of each other’s feelings, and they broke it off before it could become anything more, even if it was already too late for Mark at that point.
These days, he mostly tries not to think about it at all.
It’s only in San Diego, with Tom by his side and all their history laid out between them, that it gets difficult to hide from it.or,
In between the walls they built and the bridges they burnt, Mark and Tom find back to each other. They always do.

“I'm serious”, Mark swears. “There’s nothing wrong with you. You're a catch.”
Tom's expression sways somewhere in the middle of wary and cautiously intrigued as he casts Mark a sideways glance. “So where's the punchline?”
“I'm not joking!” Mark says, a little frustrated. His hand drops back down to his own lap. It's relatively rare for them to compliment each other so straightforwardly, without masking it with jokes, and it makes looking at Tom directly a little difficult, makes his voice come out sharper than necessary as he pushes the words out. “You’re a good-looking guy, you're funny, you're nice. Any girl would be lucky to date you."
