“I– Well, glasses don’t really suit me, you know?” Leo said, feeling a little desperate. “Can’t you just… fix it? Just, like, pour Nectar on my eyes or something and poof! 20/20 vision!”

“I’m afraid it doesn’t work like that,” Dr. Walthers said. “There is a surgery, but you have to have stable vision for at least a year before we can even look into it. Right now, glasses are your only option.”

Leo stared up at the ceiling, blaming the blurriness on his apparently shitty vision and the hell juice Dr. Walthers had inflicted upon him. Glasses. He was going to have to wear glasses, the exact thing he teased Jason about on a bi-weekly basis, at least. All because his stupid eyes had managed to fail at the one god damn thing they were supposed to do. He took in a deep, shaky breath and swallowed thickly. His life was, for the second time, officially over.

Leo's life has been far, far more difficult that it was supposed to be, but that was fine because he was difficult-er. He could handle it. What he couldn't handle was his boyfriend's puppydog eyes begging him to go see a doctor. So, he goes, he plays nice with the sadists in white coats. He is woefully unprepared for his diagnosis.

Jason was in the middle of staring at the pot of water, waiting for it to boil, when Leo stumbled into the kitchen, looking more than a little dizzy. He knocked into the edge of the counter and swore so loudly and violently that Jason couldn’t help but wince. “Leo? You okay?”

“Yeah, yeah, I’m fine,” he muttered. “My eyes have been acting weird all day, though. They won’t even try to focus on anything unless it’s, like right in front of my nose.”

Jason and Leo both have very, very bad days and neither of them can figure out why. Fortunately, the answer is embarrassingly simple.

After running away from foster care yet another time, Leo found himself sheltering from a storm in a sewerage system in Boston. All great, right? Right, until some idiot decided to jump right into Leo's life (somewhat literally). Then everything goes down the drain.

Three homeless demigods meet in a Boston sewerage system and things only go south from there.

    “Where ya gonna stick him?”
    “Fifth.”
The boy at the table regarded Frank again, one eyebrow raising. “Woof. I pity you then. Good luck newbie.”
His skin prickled with embarrassment and Frank crossed his arms, leaning forward. “What cohort are you in?”
Jason pushed between them a bit before they could get too much in each other’s space, but it didn’t feel invasive, more concerning than anything else. As if the praetor is attempting to protect them both at once. From each other.

Hey, someone should tell Leo he's in the wrong pantheon lol. Not Frank though, he's still new to this whole demigod thing.

    Summary

Jason knew who Leo was. NRU had a fantastic engineering course, which is where Leo made his home. That alone would have raised a few eyebrows about his presence in the music room, as he never played an instrument, but beyond that, Leo was deaf. Jason was pretty sure he was going to go into cardiac arrest if something wasn't done about it.

So, one evening, after rehearsal, Jason put his cello away, and hesitantly made his way over to where Leo was doodling in the margins of his textbook and staring off into the distance. Jason cleared his throat to get Leo's attention, cursed himself for being a complete moron, and rapped his knuckles on the table by Leo's book. Leo looked up at him, and Jason was immediately lost in big brown eyes and a dazzling smile. “I, um– Well, you, um–”

“Hi there,” Leo said. He sounded odd, his pitch a bit flat, and the syllables falling out of his mouth like it was muscle memory rather than actual words. “Sorry, can you speak clearly? I can't read your lips if you mumble.”

    *-*-*

Jason has spent his whole life loving music. Life makes sense for the most part until he meets profoundly deaf Leo Valdez, who claims to love music as much as he does.
