    During quieter times, Shadow makes plans to visit Spagonia, wishing to experience the cooking Maria swore by when he met her in White Space in an attempt to get to know her life on Earth better. (Un-)Fortunately, Sonic has the time show him around the place, which turns out to be a bigger help than Shadow would've ever thought. Now if only that didn't also make it harder for the hybrid to keep up his prickly walls that he's set up ever since that one fateful encounter with Sonic on the lily field...

    Perhaps Sonic has been right all along and he should be more honest with himself.

    As Shadow struggles, he quickly discovers that Sonic is hiding some secrets of his own.

    The retrieval of the ancient tech Shadow (and Sonic, in tow) has been sent to uncover takes a turn for the worst. In this case, the “worst” means… becoming physically and inextricably linked to each other. For the foreseeable future.

    Sonic has been alone dealing with the aftermath of Starfall Islands for a few weeks. He isn’t doing too good, but he refuses to reach out to anyone about the problems he won’t even address himself.

    Sonic gets an opportunity to further distance himself from these problems when GUN requests his help with a mission. Although it takes some convincing from the commander himself, Sonic joins…

    … as the Phantom Rider. No one other than the commander knows who’s underneath the helmet. Not even Team Dark— who Sonic is assigned to work with on this case— knows.

    As they solve the mission together, can Team Dark figure out who they’re working with? Can Sonic keep his identity hidden?

    Can Sonic finally face his problems head on?

    Again, it was almost a comfort. Shadow still rolled his eyes, “You’d be surprised.”

    Sonic got his breathing a little more under control, “I remember that I’m fast. Kinda my whole deal, I’m pretty sure.”

    “You just can’t remember all the times I’ve beaten you,” in and out, Shadow continued breathing, if only for Sonic's sake.

    “And I’m sure I never will,” the hero joked. And for what it’s worth, for a split second, his smile seemed genuine. Shadow would never know how he did it.

     

    OR:
    After the events of Sonic Frontiers, Sonic stays with Rouge and Shadow while he recovers from the damage done to his memories. He tries to hide it, but that can only last for so long.

    “…I was joking before, Sonic. How do you know who he was?” Shadow asked.

    “I mean, know is a strong word… I think I just met him a couple of times?”

    “How? From the way he talks, I’m quite certain that he does not even exist in our current time.”

    Or, Sonic remembers pieces of a timeline that never seems to have happened. It spooked Shadow, it spooks him, so they’re heading back to Soleanna, to the heart of it all.

    “Nothing like a little race in a collapsing building to wake you up, eh?”

    Shadow sat up, glaring at him. Idiot, he thought, more fondly than it should have been. “And what would have happened if I wasn’t there, huh?”

    Sonic shrugged. “Doesn’t matter, does it?” His grin was toothy, and it was facing Shadow, and for a moment he felt a bit like he was drowning. “You were there.”

    “Shadow, sweetheart, bring me the first-aid kit,” Rouge says, the underlying anger in her tone subsiding a little. “We've got a full-time moron to patch up.”

     

     

     

    This time Shadow doesn't stop himself from groaning and he does it particularly loudly, just so his disgruntlement reaches Sonic's ears. As if on cue, the hero limps into the living room and Shadow finally looks up from the yellowed pages. His eyes land on the bloodied mess of blue quills in front of him, who sheepishly smiles in his direction. It almost pulls at Shadow's heartstrings but then Sonic opens his mouth, making him snap out of inspecting his rival's wounds.

     

     

     

    “Hey, Shads,” he chirps, unphased by his injuries. “Missed me?”

    or: Shadow's distaste for the curse of immortal life isn't new, but the perspective Sonic presents him with is.
