"I didn’t look away from Regulus. “Does he laugh like that a lot?”
Sirius paused. “What?”
“Regulus,” I said, nodding toward the Slytherin table. “Does he... always make jokes like that? Laugh like that?”
There was a beat of silence. Even Remus glanced up.
Sirius raised a brow. “I mean... sometimes? Depends. Around people he trusts, I guess. Around me, he mostly glares and mutters like a haunted painting. But yeah—he’s got a sense of humor when he wants.”
“What kind of stuff does he joke about?” I asked, voice maybe a little too casual. “Like, is he dry? Sarcastic? Witty?”
Peter snorted into his drink. “Why, you writing a biography?”
I ignored him. “I just... I didn’t know he was funny.”
Sirius narrowed his eyes at me. “Are you—are you studying my brother?”
“No,” I said quickly. “I’m just curious. That’s all.”
Or: James Potter accidentally becomes obsessed with his best friend’s younger brother after one too many glances across the Great Hall. He’s not in love. He’s just curious. Thoroughly, inconveniently, increasingly curious.
