Summary
Following the events of the Triwizard Tournament, as if his summer hadn't been hard enough, Harry Potter's return for his fifth year at Hogwarts is met by a rather unwelcome surprise. Due a Ministry mistake with his trial, he's been expelled. But seeing as how he was proven innocent, he can be registered as a student of Hogwarts again without too much trouble. There's just the small detail that expelled students need to be re-sorted back into their Hogwarts House in order to complete the process. Simple enough.
Or it should've been, if the Sorting Hat had Sorted him back into Gryffindor like all of Hogwarts expected.
Maybe the fifth-year Slytherins don't mind the new Slytherin student, Harry Potter, joining them and their complicated tangle of emotions that they cling to after the last four years of falling for each other in all sorts of ways, but Potter definitely minds. And figuring out how to tame the feral former Gryffindor is about to become a full-time endeavor between classes.

Summary
As the summer stretches on, Harry feels a change within him. He hadn’t realized how hard he’d clung to his childhood innocence until it was ripped from him too soon. It died in that cemetery along with Cedric Diggory. He feels the gaping wound it left behind. It’s fleshy and tender and aching. Bitterness fills it.
What once was raw and vulnerable crystallizes into something much more solid and resolute. He imagines the weeping flesh around his heart becoming smooth, black marble.
OR
Harry is formally expelled from Hogwarts after the dementor incident at the end of summer. Upon his re-enrollment, he must suffer the sorting hat once more. Everyone he knows thinks it’s a ridiculous formality that will end with him being placed back in Gryffindor. Harry’s not sure he shares their confidence.Something has shifted inside him after the events of the graveyard; or maybe it’s been broken. Either way, he feels changed. This, along with other developments over the summer leave him wondering if he no longer fits into his old house. He’s got bigger things to worry about, though. Besides, what difference does it make, which house he’s in?
As it turns out, it makes all the difference.
