The room falls silent, and several sets of disbelieving eyes turn on him. The Madam’s painted-on eyebrows shoot as far up her forehead as they can go before she recovers her momentarily lost composure and narrows her eyes in suspicion.
Lan Xichen makes a higher bid, incorrectly assuming the first must not have been sufficient; if it means getting Meng Yao out of this room and away from these foul people, safe from their open leering and depraved intentions, he is willing to pay anything.
(What price can Lan Xichen hope to name for another chance to be alone with his precious, wretched A-Yao? There is none too steep. He would relinquish all that he has, and far more besides.
There is already so little of him left, yet he would give and give and give until there was nothing left at all.)

When his father said that someone ought to get rid of Nie Mingjue, that he was in their way, that he would never stop, Jin Guangyao’s first thought was about the Song of Clarity that Lan Xichen was teaching him – and the Song of Turmoil, that he’d taught himself. He’d long ago noticed the similarities in the tune between them; it wasn’t enough to fool anyone skilled in music, of course, but Nie Mingjue rather infamously wasn’t.
His second thought was: let’s wait and see.
