What I learned about writing fanfiction so far:
1) Follow the story. Don’t try to press the story into a rigid form, it will show.
2) Let characters emerge if they insist.
3) Don’t write something if it bores you. It'll probably bore the reader as well. This should never be a chore, but fun.
4) If you have no idea, how to resolve a plot point, just start writing. Your mind might surprise you.
5) Copy information about characters somewhere, you will otherwise forget it.
6) Make notes while writing about what will happen if it was talked about in the story.
7) Notes are essential. You'll forget stuff otherwise.
8) Accept that you'll forget stuff anyway.
9) Wrap a story up if the drive to write it disappears.
10) Don’t let a story get too big. Better write a new part from another perspective.
11) Be happy about positive comments and don’t dwell on the few negative ones.
12) Finish a story before posting it, or at least be a few chapters ahead.
13) Read a chapter again before posting it. You'll be kept in the mood of the story if you read the old stuff again before writing the new chapters a few ahead.
14) Accept, that spelling and grammar mistakes will slip through and you only see them after posting, or not at all.
