Since it seems like it’s a big thing, I guess I’ll clarify that I don’t care if I or another author reply to comments in the comments section. I guess it “inflates” the comments but I don’t look at comment count to read stories anyway (I’ve found it’s not a good indication for how much I’ll like a story - some of my favs have like zero comments and some of the ones I can’t bring myself to ready have like 5000). I reply to comments because I think it’s polite and I like to let people know i appreciate the feedback. And DMing everyone is too much work. I also think kudos are a better way to sort for “popular” fics because not everyone wants to write something. If people do want to write something I don’t think a reply is out of line.
Just my personal thoughts. It’s not for everyone but that’s where I’m at right now. :)
