    “Napoleon was actually around 5’6, which was average for French men of his time. And the Napoleon complex has been disproved. Studies show short men are actually less likely to lose their temper compared to taller men. Maybe you should check your facts before you open your mouth.”

    Kevin blinks, like he didn’t expect that, like Aaron has caught him off guard. Of course. Everyone always underestimates him. What else is new?

Now his university mixes lectures for material that will be tested on finals only days later with finals from other classes. Some of the material is given only twenty-four hours for learning.

    Rubbing at his temple, Aaron clicks through his last exam one more time. Each question is overthought and he has way too many sheets of scrap paper at his side as he double checks each and every calculation, diagnosis, and treatment. Finally, he reaches the end of what he can tolerate and hits submit in a fit of annoyance. Regret immediately turns his gut cold as he hurries to lower the brightness of his screen so the girl behind him can’t read his grade as examplify finishes calculating it.

    Fuck.

    He passed. It was a slim margin, but he passed.

    “Holy shit,” both Kevins repeat. Aaron has only been in the presence of double Kevin Day for less than five minutes and they’re already giving him a tension headache. It is only Kevin beginning to hyperventilate that rocks Aaron into action. His Kevin. Well, not his, but the Kevin from his- Whatever. You get it. He pushes up into a crouch and moves across to Kevin, pulling his shoulders back to straighten them out.

    “Breathe, Kevin. Breathe. Come on. It’s okay.”

    “It’s not okay, it’s fucking weird.”

    Well, Aaron can’t really argue with that. He glances up at the girls, body angled so he’s a defensive shield between Kevin and them.

    Fem Aaron sighs and pinches her nose. At some point she has also moved, taken a step in front of her Kevin so she’s tucked behind one shoulder. Apparently it is Aaron instinct to put Kevin behind them, regardless of gender.

      Wymack takes Andrew when he leaves to grab lunch for the team. Aaron's stomach churns, but free food is never something to pass down. He's been hungry enough in his life to know that. Dan, stepping into her captain shoes, turns to the remaining cousins.

      “We knew when we signed you there were going to be problems.” She looks at Nicky for the entirety, but glances at Aaron when she says problems. It is not unusual to be blamed for someone else's actions, but it stings to remain untrustworthy in the eyes of the people he spends every day with. “We took you in despite the rumors and the protests because we believed in you. We've defended you and stood by you and forgiven a lot of shit no one else would have understood. We've tried to be your teammates and tried to be your friends and have reached out to you over and over and over again.”

      Hurt spreads out over his ribs, encasing his heart and giving it a slow beat to lose itself in. We've defended you, she says, all the while giving Allison and Seth free reign to sprout whatever hate they want from the ground and ignore when the vines entangled the monsters' feet and rob them of autonomy. We've stood by you, she says, when the first thing they grasped for after Drake was gossip and stories they weren't entitled to. We've tried to be your teammates, and her friend's comment gets her nowhere. There was no commitment; there was no effort. There were bland comments, basic conversations, and little to no concern.

      Over and over again, she says, when Aaron feels trapped in a carousel with them. Except it never stops and it spins too fast to jump off of. It's a game, a mockery, and Hell. He is losing. They are losing. None of the world knows what it's like to win.

    Aaron’s brow is furrowed when Kevin comes back to him. Kevin wonders if he’s missing his sources of heat. He crouches down and carefully slides his arms under Aaron’s neck and legs, then hoists him up. He pauses once he’s got Aaron in his arms, scarcely daring to breathe. Aaron sleeps a lot lighter than him. Kevin’s not sure how he’ll respond if he wakes up to this. Thankfully, Aaron just turns his face to Kevin’s shoulder with a soft sound.

    Kevin carries him carefully across to bed and lays him down on his side. He pulls the blanket up over Aaron, goes to brush his teeth, then crawls into the other side of the bed. Aaron makes a whiny sound of protest in his sleep as the bed shifts. He rolls towards Kevin, hand reaching across the distance between them. When it catches the material of Kevin’s shirt, Aaron tugs weakly. Kevin is weaker than Aaron’s sleepy grip, immediately moving across towards him.

    “Mm.” Aaron nuzzles his face against Kevin’s shoulder. Kevin once again holds his breath until he’s sure Aaron is asleep.
