Dorian’s lessons, Sera’s schemes, Blackwall’s excursions, Varric’s tales, Cole’s whimsy, Harding’s wanderlust… everyone played a role in what culminated into the young woman standing before the Grey Warden. She held the hurt of a millennia of tormented elves in her bones, the blood of a rebel god in her veins, and an entire Inquisition’s greatest joys and sorrows in her heart.
This is the prequel to my Rook/Lucanis Dragon Age the Veilguard fanfic! The dates have been changed to account for Rook's age, so the timeline looks like this:

- Trespasser: 9:43
- Veilguard: ~9:69-70
Two Rooks and a King is a series co-created by two friends who played Veilguard side by side in a Discord voice chat and thought, "Okay but what if there were TWO Rooks, and they were SISTERS?"

"I need to talk to you" turned into something more. It always did. They'd make their way to the nearest balcony. Teasing. Exchanging glances. Hands would brush tentatively. Then shoulders, and then (just when Dorian thought he might die), lips. One of them would end up pinned against the stone wall, most often Dorian, hidden in the shadow of the eaves. In those stolen moments, they weren't Inquisitor and follower, Dalish Elf and Tevinter Altus, or even two men; just brilliant points of pleasure.

In my head, the events of DAI are Varric's version of the story. So this is a *mostly* cannon-compliant account of Lavellan and Dorian's relationship. Part 2 takes place leading up to "Wicked Eyes and Wicked Hearts." It delves into themes of: structural inequality, grief/loss, and the horrifying ordeal of being known.

Summary
Maëlys is an elven courtesan for a high-ranking member of Orlesian nobility, taught to obtain secrets and powerful information from influential figures during the throws of passion in order to benefit her Master’s ambitious plans. Sent to spy on the Conclave, Maëlys finds herself in the wrong place at the wrong time and is thereby thrown into the middle of the Inquisition, declared by many to be a sign sent from Andraste.
The issue? Maëlys is not only elven, she is Dalish. Not believing in the Maker or his Bride be one thing, a spy for an unknown Duke be another entirely. Many in the Inquisition are weary of her mysterious upbringing, though none notice more flaws in her story than Commander Rutherford. How did a member of the Dalish find work as a courtesan in Val Royeaux? Her years of service are unclear and she refuses to give the name of her Master. Be it a smart decision to allow her to make large political agreements on behalf of them?
Cullen keeps a careful watch over Maëlys, all while caught between his belief in the Maker and dedication to the promise of a Herold of Andraste, and his growing interest in the Inquisitor – which he swears only due to his skepticism and nothing more…

That will be its primary means of protecting (and, sometimes, pacifying) mages.
