Summary
Creed was born for the Arena. Knowing his destiny makes him a little solemn or a little insufferable (depending on whether you ask his parents or his brother), but at least he's not afraid to die. His life runs along its predetermined path until two weeks before the Reaping, when Creed injures his knee in training and gets sent home.
What does a child of indoctrination do with a lifetime of glory-in-death and nowhere to use it?
And what does the younger brother do when, for the first time, he steps into the sun with no one in his way?

Summary
The card arrives in Joseph’s mailbox two days before the Reaping. Plain card, good stock, incongruous against the handwritten note scribbled in pencil.
'you’ll want to be there'
No name. No return address. No postage, even. It’s a slip of paper stolen from a box of identical cards in an office somewhere, handed off to a colleague and passed down to friends of friends until it wound up here, caught between his thumb and forefinger. The wind is a roaring tunnel in his ears. The birdsong in the trees has fallen silent. Joseph stares at the paper and wonders who risked their job to send him this.
From the beginning, Joseph's oldest son was meant for victory, his youngest to carry on the family name. But Creed suffered an ugly death in the Arena, and two years later, it's Alec on stage at the Reaping. This was never the plan.
Joseph POV of Fleeing Shadows.
