Summary
Merlin hadn’t planned on eavesdropping but he had no choice.
“—must dance! You cannot tell me not a single lady here has not caught your eye?” said Lancelot with a disbelieving expression. Arthur rolled his eyes.
“They are all as equally vapid and vainglorious as the next,” he said coldly.
“Speak to them, Arthur,” urged Lancelot, not put off by Arthur's demeanour. “I hope you haven’t forgotten what Leon has suggested.” Arthur looked at him, affronted and shook his head firmly. “Why, I can recommend the lovely Lady Guinevere! She is the most beautiful lady I have ever had the pleasure of meeting.” Merlin preened and promised to relay this excellent praise to Gwen. Lancelot gestured to where she was sat and Arthur turned to look.
“Oh. She is tolerable,” conceded Arthur haughtily and Merlin doubted he was going to like the rest of his assessment. “But not handsome enough to tempt me." It took all of Merlin’s restraint not to deck that motherfucker right there and then. “You had better return to the ball and enjoy these creatures, for you are wasting your time with me."
Or it's the Pride and Prejudice/Merlin crossover we all needed (no knowledge of P&P required!)

Summary
“You would never! This is a lifestyle, Arthur, and just because you practise abstinence—” Mordred began coughing hysterically, saving Arthur from the rest of his sentence. Unfortunately, his knight couldn’t cough forever. Merlin glared at him pointedly and added, “Gwen talks, you know.”
“You sound worse than Gwaine.” Merlin shrugged, suddenly looking quite proud of himself.
“I am worse than him. You wouldn’t believe the number of—” Mordred began coughing yet again and Arthur feared he would cough his lungs back up. “Okay, can we make a deal?”
“No,” said Gwen immediately. “I’m quite offended you decided to sleep with practically everyone! I mean, Mithian?”
“Mithian…” repeated Mordred, horrified. He really regretted volunteering now — this trip had scarred him repeatedly and wasn’t worth whatever pearls of wisdom Arthur granted him. Maybe a prayer to the Triple Goddess would allow him to remove the past week from his memory.
“I also did a few knights,” said Merlin in an off-handed manner. “So I don’t get Mordred’s problem…” he added with a side glare at him.
Or Merlin's a man of many talents and Arthur gets front row seats to the mystery that is his manservant.

Summary
He looked around but the hall was suddenly filled with people scurrying around and last minute decorations being hung up frantically. Arthur even watched a couple of servants dance around each other as they carried a cake that could rival the one he had for his coronation. That’s right, Merlin’s birthday cake was more extravagant than his, the King’s. Might as well crown Merlin as king, he thought.
He paused.
Should that be his gift? Nobody could top that after all.
Or Arthur discovers that, like most people, his manservant has a birthday. And requires a present. Who knew this would be the hardest thing he would have to do as King?

Summary
Merlin cleared his throat, attracting everyone’s attention. “What the fuck is going on here?” he asked very clearly. All of the knights bowed their heads, except for Gwaine, who nearly tripped over in his hurry to run to Merlin and explain.
“Merlin, they were fighting, and I was all… ‘Eww! So irresponsible!’ But they were like… ‘We need to pick a winner’, so whatevs.”
“What?!” yelled the knights in unison.
“Gwaine, you started this,” added Elyan. “And he was the one who said we should start a bet as well.”
“No one likes a snitch, bitch,” hissed Gwaine.
Or Arthur is unconscious and no one can find his heir. No matter because Merlin doesn't mind helping around. After all, it's only until they find the heir, right?
