Chapter 2: A Literal Translation

Summary:

One of the things I love about doing translations is that you can imply stuff via word choice. The problem with that is that no one is insane enough to re-translate things to figure out what it means literally, me included.

You are the greatest warrior I have ever known.

Incredible even without armor.

An unleashed storm of rage flies from your hand.

The stars guide your steps, your blades.

Enemies - negative can/able to - you/your/you're - hit/strike.

Enemies cannot touch you.

Never - fear (verb)/afraid - attack - at - battlefield - heart.

You leap into the fray, never hesitating,

Blades - beautiful - very/extremely fatal/deadly.

Blades promising death.

Bright/glowing/strong/powerful - defeat/overpower - army/armies - all,

Your strength can conquer any army,

Meh gaanad naastar rang oyu’baat,

If - choose - destroy - ash - universe.

Burn the galaxy to ashes, if you choose.

But - you/your/you're - cage/lock up/capture - carefully - wrath/rage.

But you are careful what you let your rage touch.

That is not enough to fight a war.

Negative - Mandalorian/child of Mandalore - because - you/your/you're - believe - negitvie possible.

You are not one of my people, because you do not accept that it is possible.

Track/trail - shadows (archaic term) - heart - act/move/do foot - they/them/their - hunt/chase,

The shadows hound your steps, as you follow them back to their heart.

Can/able - crush/conquer - past tense see - darkness (archaic) - all.

You can conquer any shadow I have ever seen.

A vi kar’tayl oyu’baat cuy ashi werda.

But - we (archaic) - know/hold in heart - universe - be/exist - other - darkness (archaic)

But we both know there are more shadows in the galaxy.

Shi kalse ka’ra ara’nov ne’beskar’gam.

Only/just - blades - stars (divine)/the Force - defend - negative armor.

You have no armor, nothing but your blades and the stars to keep you safe.

 

Ja’hailir echoy’la lo tra, ni mird,

Observe/watch over - searching/mourning/lost - into - space/void/star field - I - think/calculate,

As I watch the void you’re lost in, I wonder, 

Tion ru’jorir eyayahse naysol?

Question indicator - past tense bear/carry (archaic) - echoes - too many/too much?

Were the echos too much to bear?

Tion ru’copaanir ramaanar?

Question indicator - past tense want - die?

Did you want to die out there,

Die (violently in battle) - close/near - worlds (poetic) - far.

Go down fighting among distant stars?

Did you know you weren’t coming back?

Notes:

When you think about it, both poems are sad because Canderous wrote the first one because he wanted to remember/immortalize how much of a badass Revan was, and remembering them is literally how Mandalorians honor their dead friends.
Also, if you ask me, Revan 100% knew they weren't coming back, and Canderous probably did too, subconsciously at least.
