Chapter Text
“I can’t believe you guys weren’t dating that whole time,” Yoko mumbles.
Enid sighs, “You’ve said that like 900 times in the last 3 days.”
“Because it’s ridiculous!” Yoko exclaims. “What idiots fake date when they’ve already pined after each other for years?”
“Hey! It worked out. And we didn’t pine after each other for that long!”
The vampire raises an unimpressed eyebrow. “The entire school knew before you two. We placed bets! And now I don’t even know if I won my money off Divina fair and square since you guys were only faking it before.”
“I confessed first this time if that helps.”
“Damn. Welp. I’m still keeping the money.”
“You bet against me??” Enid’s jaw drops in offense.
Yoko shrugs, “I thought Addams had more balls. Guess not. Besides, I could only listen to you go on about how in love with her you were for so long before I started to seriously doubt you were even capable of telling her.”
“Oh my godd,” the blonde groans and drops her head onto the table.
“Is she freaking out about the dating bets?” Bianca asks dryly, walking over with her lunch.
“Yep.”
Divina snickers as she sits next to the vampire. “Just wait until she hears about the engagement ones.”
“I have!” Enid grumbles into her arm. “From stupid Agnes of all people!”
Yoko snorts. “Fitting.”
The others’ amused chuckles fall silent as a five foot shadow approaches. One look at Enid whose head is still face down on the table has Wednesday scowling at the vampire.
“What did you say to her, Tanaka?”
Yoko shrugs innocently. “Only the truth. That you’re a coward, Addams.”
Enid’s head shoots up in defense of her girlfriend. “That is not what you said!”
Wednesday is unfazed. “If you’re referring to the money you think you won off us, I picked it off you three days ago.”
Two twenty dollar bills are produced by the seer and laid on the table.
“Hey!” Yoko exclaims with wide eyes. She reaches for the money but Wednesday snatches it back. “I was wondering where that went! I couldn’t pay for my coffee this morning!”
“And she was extra grumpy,” Divina mutters, earning a smack from the vampire.
“Then you should keep better track of your wallet,” Wednesday states frankly.
Enid eyes her girlfriend with adoration as she sits down next to her. “You really are evil.”
A dark eyebrow quirks ever so slightly. “Last I checked you didn’t have a problem with that.”
The werewolf stares at the smirk on the seer’s lips. “Oh I don’t.”
“Ew gross,” Yoko gags. “I can’t believe I didn’t realize you guys weren’t actually dating before. It’s so much more obvious now.”
“We didn’t even do anything!” Enid exclaims.
“No I agree, the verbal foreplay is too much.” Bianca chimes in.
“Ughhh,” Enid buries her face in Wednesday’s shoulder.
The raven doesn’t move, but she doesn’t push the blonde away either. Instead she just glares at the other outcasts at the table. “Perhaps tonight I will finally make good on my promise to smother you all in your sleep.”
“But then wolfie here would leave you, and you wouldn’t want that, would you Addams?” Yoko says smugly.
“At this rate I’d join her in smothering you guys!” Enid says in flushed exasperation.
Bianca smirks. “Quite the date.”
Wednesday’s eye twitches. Tolerated acquaintances were truly the worst. She stands up again. “Come on, mi lobo. These imbeciles have wasted enough of our time.”
“Aww did you just call her your wolf?” Yoko’s grin is the epitome of wickedness.
The tips of Wednesday’s ears redden, but she doesn’t deny it. The vampire was definitely waking up to garlic in her pillowcase tomorrow though.
“Uh yeah, let’s go.” Enid stands up quickly, face also red. Though she has to admit, the embarrassment she sees mirrored on her girlfriend’s face is absolutely adorable.
The two roommates depart the table, not quite holding hands, but finger tips brushing as they walk away.
Bianca tilts her head, “You know. They are really cute together.”
Yoko sighs. “They really are.”
A pause.
“$20 Addams proposes?”
Bianca grins. “You’re on.”
“I heard that!” The werewolf yells over her shoulder.
--------------------------------------------------------------
“I can’t believe we’re graduating today,” Enid says with a wistful sigh as she stares out their split window into the spring morning. “I’m going to miss this room.”
“It has been functional,” Wednesday states dryly, moving to stand shoulder to shoulder with her roommate.
The blonde rolls her eyes and nudges her girlfriend. “Oh come on, I know you’ll miss it too. Where else are we gonna find a window that matches our aesthetic so well?”
“If you want, I can have Lurch add a similar feature to our apartment in New York.”
Our apartment. Enid lets the words wash over her for a moment. Reveling in the fact that Wednesday would continue to be this close to her for the next four years, and hopefully beyond. Far beyond.
“Uh no. That sounds crazy expensive-”
A shrug from the Addams.
“-but it’s cute of you to offer, Wends.” Enid leans over and gives the raven a chaste kiss on the lips.
Wednesday frowns in that adorable pouty way. “I’ve told you not to use that word in reference to me.”
“But it just fits so well,” Enid’s tone has a teasing lilt to it as she wraps her arms around the seer’s neck. She presses a kiss to the raven’s jaw.
Wednesday huffs and holds up her arm to check her watch, though her neck automatically tilts to allow the wolf further access to her throat. “If you keep this up, you’re going to be late.”
“Why would I be the one that’s late?” Enid huffs into smooth skin.
“Because I don’t take an eternity to get ready,” Wednesday deadpans, though goosebumps break out where the blonde continues to nip at her collarbone.
“I don’t take an eternity,” the wolf whines.
“We have to be there in 47 minutes.”
“What??” Enid jumps back. “How did it get to be so late?”
“Exactly my point.”
“Ugh, you’re the worst.” Enid mumbles, but kisses the seer’s lips one last time before pulling away completely to grab her things. “I’m going to get dressed at Yoko’s. You better also be ready when I get back. No last minute case work.”
“I have no idea what you mean.”
Enid rolls her eyes and heads toward the door. “I’m serious, Wednesday.”
“Naturally.”
The door clicks shut.
30 minutes later Enid is rushing back in, half expecting to find Wednesday just as she left her, pouring over her case notes in jeans and a t-shirt. The view she actually gets has her nearly tripping over her own two feet as she enters the room.
Wednesday stands there in dark slacks and a crisp white shirt that she’s buttoning the sleeves of. A dark black suit vest is worn over the shirt with a purple pocket square just poking out. The only time Wednesday Addams would ever show a semblance of school spirit.
“God, Wednesday…” Enid is on the raven before the girl even finishes buttoning up her sleeves. She runs her hands over the crisp white collar. “You look so good.”
Wednesday finishes meticulously buttoning her sleeve and finally turns her full attention to the wolf. Her eyes rake over the girl in front of her with a mind of their own. Neurons misfiring in her brain at the sight of Enid in an elegant black dress and perfectly curled hair.
Enid smirks at the appraisal. “See something you like?”
Wednesday’s hands subconsciously come to the blonde’s waist, pulling her closer. “You are…distracting.”
“Hmm,” the wolf says thoughtfully, digging her finger tips lightly into the nape of the raven’s neck. “Only distracting?”
“Breathtaking,” Wednesday murmurs into the space between them that was quickly vanishing.
Enid flushes crimson and loses herself in brown orbs. “Wends…”
“My color suits you.”
The blonde’s victorious grin is blinding. “So you admit black is your color!”
“Only when you wear it.” It’s said too genuinely to be teasing.
The shy, blissful look on Enid’s face has Wednesday leaning in for a kiss, but the wolf pulls away at the last second. “Uh uh. Don’t ruin my lipstick.”
Wednesday rolls her eyes with a huff but starts to dutifully pull back. Enid laughs joyfully at the pout and tugs her girlfriend in for a proper and deep kiss, fully ruining both of their lipstick in the process.
“Hypocrite,” the raven mutters against red lips.
Enid’s smirk is devastating. “Is that a problem?”
“No,” Wednesday says roughly, leaning in to mix their lipstick yet again.
“Ew, are you guys ever not making out?”
“AGNES!” Enid jumps away from her girlfriend and glares at the redhead slowly fading into view. “What the hell??”
“You guys left the window open again.”
The blonde glances at said window. “No we didn’t!”
“Oops. I could’ve sworn it was.” Agnes says innocently.
Enid growls while Wednesday just sighs. “Why are you here Agnes? We have to be at the ceremony in 10 minutes.”
“Yes, you guys looked very concerned about getting there on time.”
“Careful.” Wednesday’s tone is laced with genuine warning now.
Agnes backs down a bit and fiddles with her hands. “Well you know. You guys are graduating today. And I guess I…”
The redhead suddenly looks on the verge of tears.
“Aw Agnes,” Enid reaches out and grasps the younger girl’s shoulders in an embrace, her previous anger already forgotten. “We’ll miss you too.”
“Debatable.” Wednesday mutters.
Enid rolls her eyes and rubs the redhead’s back gently. “We won’t be that far away if you ever need us.”
Agnes sniffles but nods with a sneaky smile. “Then in a few years I’ll go to school in New York and we’ll be reunited again! Three musketeers for life!”
Enid can’t help but shake her head and laugh as she embraces the redhead again. Then Agnes pulls away and steps toward Wednesday.
The seer takes a full step back. “If you think I’m letting you hug me, you’re sorely mistaken.”
Agnes pouts a bit. “You let Enid hug you.”
“She is an exception,” Wednesday says stiffly, causing the werewolf to grin with pride. “But I do have something for you.”
The seer digs around in her desk and produces a crystal ball. She holds it out to the redhead. “Should you ever need assistance. I’m sure Enid would be more than happy to help.”
Enid rolls her eyes yet again but reaches out and squeezes her girlfriend’s hand lovingly all the same.
Agnes squeaks and takes the crystal ball with delight. “Thanks Wednesday! I’ll use it everyday!”
“I already regret it.”
“Too bad! No take backs. Anyway, you guys should probably get going. Don’t want to miss your speech.”
“Yes,” Wednesday grumbles. “All that work to be top of the class and they reward you by making you give a speech on this childish day of sentiment. What torture.”
“Please, like you even did that much work,” Enid scoffs. “You sleepwalked through Nevermore classes and still somehow got valedictorian.”
“Perhaps you could’ve if you were not involved in 16 different school clubs.”
“Eh, at least I have a social life,” Enid teases, wiping the smeared lipstick on Wednesday’s lips. “But we should go. Come on.”
The three musketeers exit Ophelia Hall together one last time.
--------------------------------------
“Wednesday!” Eugene is the first to stumble across the raven after the ceremony. “Can’t believe you guys graduated!”
“Indeed,” the seer mutters, already done with the socialization of this day.
“Bee club won’t be the same without you.”
“I already forced Pugsley and Agnes to join next year.”
“I know, but still.”
Wednesday nods ever so slightly in acknowledgement of their friendship. “I’m sure the club is in good hands.”
“Thanks Wednesday. See you around.” Eugene gives the seer a bright smile before heading off.
“There’s our little storm cloud!” Gomez’s voice reverberates across the field.
Wednesday sighs, but turns to face her family rushing toward her. She lets her parents and brother engulf her in a group hug that she doesn’t return, but doesn’t pull away from in her usual haste.
“We’re so proud of you,” Gomez grins widely.
“For many things,” Morticia adds, giving her daughter a knowing look. They both glance over at the ghost of Larissa Weems who lingers arrogantly to the side, as if all Wednesday’s recent success in her educational and personal life had been her own doing.
“Yes,” Wednesday mutters the word in distaste, wondering if there was a spell to permanently sever her spirit guide connection. Weems’ smug grin only grows wider before she fades from view.
“I’m going to miss winning money off you and Enid,” Pugsley exclaims, arms still wrapped around his sister.
“A truly pathetic pastime,” the raven grumbles.
“But lucrative.”
“Wednesday!” Enid runs up to the Addams family in her purple cap and gown.
“Enid!” Gomez and Morticia turn to the werewolf with open arms. “We’re so proud of you as well!”
“Oh!” Enid exclaims in surprise as she’s wrapped up in a hug. Tears immediately form in her eyes. “Thanks.”
Wednesday watches the blonde closely, allowing her the moment. She feels something scarily close to warmth in her chest at the sight of the wolf finally receiving the parental love and acceptance she always deserved. It’s only when the hug finally disbands that she chimes in. “What is it?”
Enid suddenly remembers why she ran over in the first place and the smile drops from her face. “My parents are here.”
Wednesday’s eyes, softened from the sentiments of the day, immediately turn back to their cold sharpness. “Well then let’s go greet them.”
She reaches out and grasps Enid’s hand firmly and leads her back into the crowd. Primed for murder.
“Your mother’s ring will look so good on young Enid’s hand,” Gomez wraps his arm around his wife as he watches his daughter go with a large smile.
“Indeed, mi amor.” Morticia places a kiss on her husband’s lips.
Across the field, Esther Sinclair isn’t hard to spot, standing there in her outdated sweater and skirt, looking above it all.
“Ah Enid,” Esther greets her daughter with her usual judgemental gaze.
Enid tightens her grip on Wednesday’s hand. “Mother.”
Esther observes their clasped hands with disdain. “I came here in hopes that you had learned some lessons in your last semester. But I see you are still associating with the worst sort of people.”
“Yes, Wednesday and I are still dating.”
“Are you really?”
Enid almost snorts at the irony.
“Or is this just another one of your ridiculous teenage rebellious phases?” Esther continues.
“It’s not a rebellious phase!” Enid snaps. “I love her!”
“You do not!” Esther retorts, taking a threatening step forward.
Wednesday steps in front of Esther before she can get any further, fire blazing in her eyes. “I would not do that if I were you.”
Esther scowls but stops her movement. “Addams. Your family is always corrupting the name of outcast. And now you are corrupting my daughter-”
“Mother!” Enid steps forward angrily but Wednesday holds out her arm to stop her.
The seer glares at Esther Sinclair. “Your daughter has somehow managed to be the brightest, purest, most unstoppable force in any room she is in. Despite having you as a mother. The last thing she is, is corruptible.”
Enid’s eyes shine brightly with tears as she looks at her girlfriend. So this is what unconditional love felt like.
“As for myself,” Wednesday continues. “You’re right. I’m dark. Manipulative. Dangerous. And I intend to use every one of those traits to keep you from ever hurting Enid again.”
Esther’s claws extend, “You little-”
“Don’t you dare touch her,” Enid growls, this time jumping in front of Wednesday, her own claws extending.
Esther scowls at her daughter. “Such a disappointment.”
“Yes, you are.” Enid shoots back, no longer afraid.
“Don’t come home.”
“Wasn’t planning on it.”
Wednesday steps in again. “Leave.”
“I don’t take-”
An object whistles past Esther’s ear in warning. Wednesday’s nunchuks.
“Now.”
The vein in Esther’s head twitches, but she finally turns and stomps off.
Murray Sinclair walks up solemnly. Wednesday doesn’t move, keeping herself firmly between Enid and her father.
The man looks at his daughter with a small twinkle in his eye that may have resembled pride if he wasn’t such a coward. “You picked a good one, kiddo.”
Enid gives him a wry smile. “I know dad.”
“I’m sorry.”
Enid breathes in deeply. “I don’t need your apologies anymore.”
The man only nods sadly and walks off.
As soon as he’s gone, Wednesday turns around and grasps Enid’s face in her hands. An enormous display of affection for their very public setting. She studies the werewolf in concern. “Are you okay, mi lobo?”
Enid nods, and refuses to let her tears fall this time. Her parents were no longer worthy of her tears. She reaches up and grasps the seer’s hands in her own. “Y-Yeah. I’m okay. I have you. I’ll always be okay with you, Wednesday.”
The seer inhales audibly at the words of devotion. Then takes a step back with a satisfied nod, holding out her hand. “Come on then. My parents insisted on family dinner.”
Enid grins, the tears fading from her eyes. Family. It felt real now. She finally had a family who loved and accepted her just how she was.
She links her fingers with Wednesday’s. “Lead the way.”
---------------------------------------
It’s past 10pm by the time the two roommates, along with Bianca, Ajax, Yoko, and Divina, find themselves lounging around on the floor in the upper room of Ophelia Hall. Wednesday had always hated social gatherings in their room, but this was one of the few exceptions. Tomorrow they’d all be packing up to leave Nevermore for good. So tonight she can’t quite bring herself to be upset by the turn of events.
Ajax passes out some bottles of beer he smuggled in. This time, Wednesday takes it without complaint, though has no intentions of consuming much of it.
“Just like old times,” Yoko smirks as she leans against Enid’s bed. She nods at the roommates. “Are you guys gonna make out again and pretend you aren’t madly in love with each other?”
Enid flushes while Wednesday just glares. “I don’t know Tanaka, are you gonna throw up again just because you can’t handle a simple car ride?”
“Your driving was insane!” Yoko exclaims in defense.
“I thought vampires were supposed to have stronger stomachs.”
“We do!”
“Pathetic.”
“Hey!” Enid interjects before her best friend and girlfriend can continue arguing. “I just realized, my mom never found out that we weren’t actually dating! Or that we broke up. Well, kinda broke up.”
“Yes…it is…suspicious.” Wednesday looks at Bianca pointedly.
The siren sighs. “How long have you known?”
“Since I overheard that vanisher in your acappella group muttering to herself about how she couldn’t tell her sister the latest gossip.”
“Wait, what?” Enid asks in confusion.
Bianca plays with her amulet. “Well, I figured out that you two weren’t actually dating-”
“What??” Enid chokes on her beer.
“And sort of figured you were faking it for Enid’s mom. So when I heard you broke up, due to being idiots, might I add, I may have used my…influcence, to stop the news from spreading past Nevermore walls. Some rumors still got out, since it took you guys forever to get your shit together. But luckily it seems it never reached your parents.
“Wow, that’s…” Enid looks meaningfully at the siren. “Thanks.”
Bianca holds up her beer bottle. “To difficult parents.”
Everyone toasts to that. Even Wednesday holds up her bottle ever so slightly.
Hours later and Enid is leaning her head against Wednesday’s shoulder while they sit against the wall under their window. The seer stares off into space, long since checked out of the conversation, but content to be with the wolf. Her finger tips subconsciously run through dyed strands of blonde hair.
“Alright guys,” Ajax sighs and stands up. “I got to get up early to pack tomorrow.”
“Same.” All the others get up too.
Hugs are shared (though no one attempts it with Wednesday, they still know better). Tears are shed. Promises to stay in touch are made.
Yoko nods at the raven. “You’re not so bad, Addams.”
“I can’t say same about you, Tanaka.”
The vampire smiles. “Take care of our girl, will you?”
Wednesday glances over at Enid who is hugging Divina goodbye. She nods once. Small, but noticeable. An indelible promise.
Yoko grins in satisfaction before heading toward Divina. The werewolf would be in good hands.
“I meant to say earlier,” Bianca steps in front of the seer. “Nice speech today, Addams. I think it’s the first one I’ve seen you give without setting something on fire.”
“It did not seem…required this time.” Wednesday mutters.
“You mean Enid told you not to.”
The seer has no comment for that.
Bianca laughs and shakes her head. “I’m gonna miss our fencing matches.”
“Perhaps Columbia and Brown will face each other.”
“If so, you better watch your back, Addams.”
“Likewise, Barclay.”
The raven and siren nod at each other in respect before Bianca heads out. Ajax, Yoko and Divina soon follow, leaving the roommates once again alone. Just how it started all those years ago.
Enid turns to Wednesday with tears in her eyes, and this time the raven doesn’t ask why. She feels the unfamiliar ache of endings in her own chest as well.
The blonde grasps the seer’s hand and leads them onto the balcony. The warm night air wraps them up like it knows it’s their last night at Nevermore Academy. They lean against the railing, each taking their side in front of the window one last time.
“Do you remember your first day here?” Enid asks. “We had our first heart to heart right here.”
“I wouldn’t call it a heart to heart,” Wednesday says dryly.
“You told me about Nero. Have you ever told that story to anyone else?”
Now that Wednesday thinks about it, she hadn’t. Since day one, Enid had been breaking down her walls with effortless ease.
Enid smiles knowingly. “And you accepted me even though I couldn’t wolf out.”
Wednesday’s response is quick and resolute. “Your wolf is a magnificent part of you, Enid. But it does not define you.”
Christ, Yoko may lose her bet again. Because Enid’s strongly considering just proposing right then and there. How could someone so rough around the edges be the most extraordinary person she had ever met?
The wolf reins in her desire to drop to one knee (barely), and instead returns to reminiscing. “And we had our first kiss right here too.”
“It wasn’t our first kiss.”
“Our first real one.”
“The other one seemed pretty real.”
“You know what I mean.”
“I don’t-”
Enid leans over and kisses the seer just to get her to shut up.
“Cheater,” Wednesday mutters.
A smirk. “Is that a problem?”
Wednesday’s brilliant mind can’t come up with any reason for it to be.
Enid smiles softly and turns to fully face her girlfriend, hands on the smaller girl’s waist. “I love you, Wednesday.”
The seer turns now too, though doesn’t initiate more contact quite yet. “Hmm, even though I’m not easy?”
“Ha. Especially then. I don’t want easy.”
Wednesday’s lips twitch slightly. “And I don’t want darkness or monsters or chaos.”
The blonde’s clear laugh echoes across the courtyard, chasing away all the wrongs in the world, melting the frigidness of Wednesday’s cold heart. “I wish I could rub this in Tyler’s face.”
“We can go torture him anytime you wish.”
Somehow that has Enid swooning. Yeah, she belonged with an Addams. This Addams.
Wednesday turns back to look out over the railing while Enid just continues to stare at her side profile in that lovesick way Yoko always teased her about. The wolf had found its moon.
Silence falls over them, but this time it’s comfortable, relaxed. Filled with understanding and clarity that they had so often lacked in the months prior.
“Do you know what else happened on this balcony?”
Enid raises her eyebrows, surprised the seer was the one to break the silence and even more surprised that she was reminiscing. “You played your cello at ungodly hours and kept the entire school awake every night?”
“No, though I fail to see any issue with that.”
The blonde rolls her eyes. “Then what else happened?”
“I thought you died.”
The words hit Enid like a shot to the ribs. Prank day. She had almost forgotten about the unexpected terror she had induced on the raven’s face that day. It was only later when she found out about Wednesday’s vision that she fully understood that terror.
“Wends I’m-”
“Don’t apologize. The subterfuge was still impressive.”
Enid tilts her head. “But?”
A deep breath from the seer. “But thinking you died wasn’t even the most terrifying part of that experience.”
“Um…should I be offended?”
Wednesday disregards the question and turns toward Enid again, swallowing thickly. “The most terrifying part of that experience was what happened right after. When you sat up and licked that ridiculous jam on your throat. When I felt this incredible relief flood my veins that I had never thought myself capable of feeling.”
The seer’s hand is on Enid’s cheek now, tracing her scars. Enid holds her breath, afraid she’ll break the moment if she inhales.
“When I realized how much I…cared for you.”
The wolf’s eyes swirl with emotion, blue and yellow mixing in a dazzling display. The question Yoko had asked them all those months ago finally answered. “That was your moment??”
A simple nod.
“That was over 2 years ago!”
“It was the same day I saved you and that useless other werewolf, if I recall.” Wednesday bristles.
“Right…yeah, true. I called you the tunnel at the end of my light. Then…kissed Bruno.” Enid winces.
“Poor survival instincts,” Wednesday mutters in distaste.
“If it makes you feel any better, I was thinking of you?” The wolf nuzzles her nose against the seer’s, trying to convey her devotion, despite past mishaps.
“That won’t save him from my decapitation attempts.” Wednesday fully means the words, even as she leans into the wolf’s touch.
Enid sighs and kisses the raven’s jaw lightly before pulling back. “Fair. But wait, that means…we both realized the same day.”
“Indeed.”
“We’re both idiots.”
“Speak for yourself.”
Another eyeroll escapes the wolf before she tugs the raven in for a slow and deep kiss. Running her hands through braided hair gently. Wednesday grips the blonde’s shirt tightly, pulling her impossibly closer. It’s not frantic or desperate this time, but lingers with the promise of forever. The promise of something real.
“I still think you’re weird as shit though,” Enid mutters when she finally pulls back for breath.
“I love you too.”
