Chapter Text

Turns out finding a place to stay with no money or identification is very hard. Having no proof of your existence on paper seemingly turns a lot of people off, who would've thought?

That and the lack of money, you guess.

You huff to yourself in frustration, currently back in the alley you first woke up in. Call it delusion but you feel oddly safer here than any other place — or, any place you can afford to be in currently. Maybe it's because it's a seemingly empty alleyway with rarely anyone coming by, opting instead to throw any trash they have in the big recycle bins up ahead. Or maybe it's because this place is the first thing you saw when you opened your eyes.

You don't want to linger on the 'why'. It's not that important anyways. (At least the banana peel is still here. You've started to almost feel comfort in its presence — even if sometimes you swear it inches closer to you.)

What you do need to think about is shelter. Sure, you could probably sleep in any out of the way street corners you can find, but that's not ideal for the long run. While this city seems to be strangely devoid of any serious crime, it's still not a good idea to assume you wont run into any unsavory people if you stick around long enough. There's also the matter of food and water. You've been managing for a few weeks now with rummaging through trash cans of fast food buildings and drinking from the local water fountains for thirsty tourists (that you weirdly don't have to pay for to make the water run. Guess capitalism isn't as bad here). It's okay, even if some days you go without eating at all.

Sometimes you're glad its a kids cartoon you're trapped in.

BOOM!

And sometimes you're not.

Because this is universe was designed for children or at the very least teenagers, every other day a 'big bad villain' (most of the time DBK and his family) shows up to cause minor or major damage to the city and its inhabitants until the group of heroes eventually stop them. Rinse and repeat.

It's been this way ever since the Demon Bull Kings attack around two weeks ago — the one that also marked the start of the show and in turn the end of the peace.

You've been lucky and haven't been in the affected areas the past times these cartoonishly evil villains have focused on, but by the sound of that 'boom', it seems like that luck has finally run out.

You stand up and brush away any dirt on you. It's a habit more than anything, as you're covered head to toe in grime and probably stink worse than the trashcan next to you from weeks living in the streets.

Idly scratching the fur on your hand (it took a while for you to get used to all the extra hair), you glance around. Silent, empty alley to your right and loud, screaming crowd of civilians to your right.

Seems normal enough for a villain attack.

Choosing to follow the crowd, you make sure the huge scarf you found in the trash a few days ago securely wraps around your neck and head—resembling a hood—to hide your ears. You didn't like the attention your monkey features gave you (because you weren't supposed to have them, you aren't supposed to be here, and because you don't enjoy attention in general) so you'd taken to hiding them with the scarf and tucking your tail in your clothes. It puts a strain on your tail as its forced to stay in a curled up position so as to not leave a suspicious outline through your shirt, but it's the best you've got.

Taking one last wary look around, you step into the crowd and let yourself get dragged by the current of people. Other people kept bumping into you, one even accidentally elbowing you in the back, but you continue forward.

You just hope the villain of the week doesn't cause too much destruction to your—sort of—temporary home.

It's been around 2 hours, maybe more. You moved with the crowd until breaking off once a good enough distance had formed between you and the heart of the problem. You still haven't learned the layout of the city so not going too far from the few places you do know seems like a smart idea.

So, here you are. Sitting on the curb of a sidewalk in front of a convenience store.

Your head hangs a tad as you just sit there, lost in thought, while waiting for the threat to pass so you can go back to your alley and continue doing nothing or internally complaining about your stupid situation. You've certainly a lot to look forward to.

To get your mind off of it, you try to figure out what you should do about your homeless situation.

Maybe you should interact with some of the main characters? Or— uh— the ones that you know of at least. You of course know MK, you know that a variation of Sun Wukong is in this cartoon (even if you're not sure how he looks like), and you vaguely remember some of the other characters from images you've seen around the internet.

Hm, yeah — you're not getting anywhere like that. Back to the drawing board.

You should see about getting a job. Even if the pay is low (and it will be since nobody but backend jobs would hire you without any papers), any amount of money is better than no money.

Goal set, you raise your head to look at the sky. It's gotten dark and stars are dancing in the sky. You breathe in the fresh night air — at least the sky hasn't changed from your original world, you'd probably cry if it did.

You sit up, dusting yourself once again. Alright, time to lock in.

Notes:

i actually had planned for the mc to meet the hero gang this chapter but im not sure about that anymore

what do you guys think? should i make mc interact with the main characters or have them to their own thing and accidentally bump into them later on? or have very little interactions between them at all?

im fine with any of them! i just thought id ask since the point of this fic was to not be similar to all the other ones (ie reader/mc instantly becomes best friends with the main characters and the fanfic turns into an "and bumblebee!!" situation)

some authors can pull it off and one of my favorite lmk fanfics has that premise, but i feel like the prompt is sooooooo overuseddddd so i wanted to do something different!

idk, let me know what you guys would like (tho its moreso to look at different opinions as in the end ill probably just go with whatever i like more)

okay im gonna disappear again for a month or two! BYEEEEEEEEE

Notes:

the reader can be any type of monkey btw!! only thing that's specified is that they're a old world monkey
(ps i had like 30 tabs open while writing this because describing a monkey-ish face is haaard)
